World Series of Birding

We have birds around us every day, but how often do we notice them and realize how many varieties and types there are out there? It’s quite amazing once you get into it!

The World Series of Birding is a 24 hour marathon of Birding. Competitors are striving to identify as many birds as they can by sight or sound, from midnight to midnight in May every spring.

Kim talked to Bill Lynch and it was incredibly fascinating to learn about Birding and the ins and outs of Competitive Birding!

This is a pic of Bill and a Sharp-shinned Hawk! Every fall, Cape May Bird Observatory conducts research on migrating raptors. Part of that research is catching and "tagging" birds of prey by putting light-weight bracelets on their ankles. When these birds return (or when they're spotted in other states or even countries) the numbers on the bracelets can be entered into a database that will list the bird's history.

They found 126 species without the use of any motorized vehicles

This was taken on a below (way below!) freezing day birding at Sandy Hook National Recreation Area in New Jersey.
