National Gingerbread House Competition
Welcome to our Christmas in July spectacular featuring the National Gingerbread House Competition! If you’re looking for a sweet summer treat, this episode really takes the cake.
The National GIngerbread Competition is held every November in Asheville, North Carolina. What began with a small group of gingerbread houses built by community members as another way to celebrate the holiday season has now, two decades later, become The Omni Grove Park Inn National Gingerbread House Competition™ and is one of the nation's most celebrated and competitive holiday events.
We figured this was a good enough reason to proclaim Christmas in July and litter the episode with horrendous/hilarious holiday puns. But that will become Elf evident in no time.
First we talked to the organizer Tracey Johnston-Crum who gives us the background on the competition and the lay of the land.
From there we meet the competition and there are all pretty damn awesome. Merry (yes.) has been competing for years and introduced a lot of local students to it. Linda uses power tools to make her gingerbread creations. Anne is last years winner. And Beatriz makes beautiful houses that are delicious! Each has a great passion for the edible homes and bring a lot to the community. All of their artistry is top notch and you will be amazed at their creations. Have a look!
